Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wellington District Curriculum

The Poudre School District has developed a science curriculum that teaches students the fundamentals of scientific exploration, but which also frames science as an intellectual, cultural, and social undertaking. In learning about scientific processes, students also learn how to make effective decisions. Students acquire the ability to research and use data to develop hypotheses, which also prepares them to engage in debate and critique their findings.

The world languages curriculum in Wellington is far more than just learning a second language. Students learn to communicate both verbally and non-verbally for varied audiences. Using their study of language, students develop an understanding of other cultures and traditions, and become more informed about important issues around the world. Students also acquire the ability to compare and contrast their culture with that of the target language. Connections to other content areas are made as well, so students utilize their new language skills.

Chalk Talk: Why Teach Grammar?

In today’s world of texting and tweeting, some children have lost the ability to use proper grammar when writing and speaking. Aside from negatively impacting their ability to communicate effectively, using poor grammar can give the impression that children are not well educated or that they just don’t care. Using poor grammar could negatively impact a student’s ability to pass an exam, get into the college of their choice, or later on, get the job they covet. Using proper grammar teaches important skills required for success in school and beyond – critical thinking, logic, and effective communication among them. Developing the ability to convey thoughts and opinions in an articulate manner is essential for students who wish to portray themselves as intelligent and polished speakers and writers.
