Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wellston District Curriculum

Students in English courses in Wellston become well versed in reading texts of an informational nature. Critical reading skills are acquired, which allow learners to extract the main ideas from a text, as well as identify the supporting details of those main ideas. Learners come to an understanding of the relationship between the text and illustrations, photos, charts, and graphs as well. Students also explore how two different texts may treat the same topic differently by comparing and contrasting the authors’ main points. Students work on utilizing research to support their analyses of informational texts, including citing resources properly.

Middle school learners also develop the ability to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases by using the context in which they appear. When the context doesn’t provide enough clues, students learn how to utilize resources such as dictionaries to learn the meaning of unfamiliar terms. An analysis of the craft and structure of texts is undertaken as well.

Chalk Talk: Reading Helps Build Other Skills

Reading, and reading well, is an essential skill students must master in order to reach their academic and career-related goals. More than just facilitating improved communication abilities, reading offers a wide variety of benefits to students. Reading requires enhanced levels of concentration, and as such, students that read often are better able to pay attention in class and engage in their learning. Children that read frequently also have expanded vocabularies, which aid them in communicating with others, as well as becoming improved writers. Reading helps students develop empathic understanding as well. By reading a story and identifying with characters, students are better able to see things from multiple perspectives. Reading is also an excellent way for children to relax. Reading before bedtime is a particularly good time to read, because even just a few minutes of reading helps kids decompress, relax, and let go of all the stresses of their day.
