Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Weslaco District Curriculum

Geography is taught as a part of the Social Studies curriculum at Weslaco School. Students learn to use directional words in kindergarten when they learn words such as nearer, farther, up and down. Soon they are able to create a map of their classroom or their house. This is then translated into creating and reading maps of the community and then the state. They then learn about the regions of the United States along with information about the topography of various locations.

Biology is first learned in kindergarten when students learn about the basic parts of plants or animals. This is expanded upon in the next few years when students learn about the parts of these living being in more detail. They learn about the root hairs, and the reproductive systems of plants and animal. In middle and high school, students learn about the cells that make up each life form and they use laboratories to compare cells. Great emphasis is placed on the process of formulating and testing scientific hypotheses so students understand how to investigate scientific theories.

Chalk Talk: Social Development of Third Graders

Children that are third grade need parents to support them in building friendships. This is also about the age when words like geek enters their vocabulary, so parents need to make sure to remind them the importance of being nice to others and to welcome new friends into their lives. Most children of this age also like to spend as much time as they can with their friends, which means they will be excited about going to school. As much as they enjoy their friends, they can also be critical of others, including their teacher. If a child shows this behavior, talk about why they feel like this. This encourages them to use their words to explain and open a conversation. These tips should help parents with the ups and downs of third grade.
