Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Chester District Curriculum

Providing Core classes is one thing, but West Chester Area School District also provides many other courses, including Business and Marketing courses where students are introduced to the business world in various concentrations such as accounting, marketing, technology, and other electives. Within these courses, students are able to connect their learning inside the classroom with real world situations and applications in the community and may even have the opportunity to pursue internships or career learning experiences.

In their Physical Education and Health programs, West Chester Area School District has chosen to mix in class learning with physical activities so that students not only have physical activities, but understand the benefits of it. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade all participate in PE and Health classes and learn about physical and emotional health and how to maintain these aspects even after their school years are over. They have many different types of PE classes for high school students including dance, yoga, archery, among other options.

Chalk Talk: Why Breakfast Is Important for Students

With students hating to get out of bed in the morning, it can be tempting to let them sleep through their breakfast time. While sometimes more convenient, this may not be the best way to help your student succeed. It has been observed that breakfast greatly helps students in school. Educators are increasingly attuned to this and make provisions to ensure students are having healthy breakfasts. Students are more alert and ready to learn if they eat properly. Eating breakfasts like donuts or pastries that provide a high sugar content does not serve children as well as a breakfast of fruits and whole grains. With a proper breakfast, their brain has the energy it needs to function maximally. They are not distracted in class by hunger pains or by headaches that can be caused by skipping a meal. When students have a good breakfast, they are able to perform at a higher level with confidence. Providing healthy breakfast options, even quick ones, is a good way to jump start your students’ education.
