West Hartford District and Curriculum

All schools follow the common core state of Connecticut Standards. These standards seek to provide in-depth understanding. At each grade level, a limited number of topics are taught to allow time to delve deeply before moving on. This creates students who truly understand the concepts at every level. All teaching is student-centered and data driven, meaning they have accurate data to provide insight into the strengths and weaknesses of individual students and whole grade levels.

We currently cover the following West Hartford-area school district: West Hartford Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Hartford District Curriculum

In elementary school, West Hartford emphasizes reading and writing, as well as early math skills so students develop operational knowledge. There is a focus on enriching projects, some of which are school wide. There are two elementary magnet schools to provide unique educational opportunities for those students accepted. One school focuses on Science and Technology and the other is an International Academy School. There are special programs at every elementary school to stimulate and engage all talented and gifted students.

At the high school level, the district is focused on developing student potential and making sure all students are ready to compete globally. Their aim is to maintain a rigorous curriculum that encourages problem solving and critical thinking. Students are able to expand into areas of personal interest through the electives and specialized programs, but will find they are using the knowledge, abilities and strategies gained in core academics to develop their more advanced work.

Chalk Talk: Learning a Foreign Language

At most schools in the US, high school students are expected to take a foreign language before graduation. Most put in their time in the class but leave school never becoming fluent in any language and only have a rudimentary knowledge at best. Some believe, however, the acquisition of another language at an earlier age, even in elementary, can have benefits that will last a lifetime. If a student can understand how to read, write and speak two or more languages, it tends to create students who excel at all levels of education. Fluency in two languages also makes them more competitive in a diverse global workforce.
