Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Haven District Curriculum

The core Math curriculum is designed to produce students who are capable of using mathematics to solve problems. This begins in kindergarten and first grade, when students are taught basic arithmetic using manipulatives, physical objects that allow them to manually perform mathematical operations. There is also an emphasis on visualizing and communicating about mathematics problems using diagrams, pictures, bar charts, or graphs.

The Math curriculum is designed so that students will begin to learn the underlying principles behind higher mathematics in their very early math classes. That means that students learn basic geometry throughout elementary school, are taught arithmetic in ways that underscore its connections to algebra, and are exposed to statistical reasoning throughout elementary math. The high school mathematics curriculum follows an integrated model, where students learn algebra and geometry simultaneously, so as to reinforce the connections between them.

Chalk Talk: Mathematical Literacy

Numeracy, or the basic ability to understand mathematics, is essential for everyone in our modern age. Math is necessary for many careers, including ones in accounting, the culinary arts, science, and technology, and for careers that use statistics, such as advertising. But even people who don’t use math in their jobs will still need it in their everyday lives. Understanding statistics, proportions, and rates is important to understand your own finances, information about the economy, and public opinion data. Being conversant in numbers is as important as being able to read, which is why it’s so important that students get a good mathematics education in school.
