Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Memphis District Curriculum

A core curriculum consisting of English, History, Math, Science and Languages is offered to students. Each area is concentrated on key topics, such as Algebra in Math, or writing and literacy in English, and these areas are developed and expanded upon for students each year. From the basis provided in elementary school in fundamentals, students become able to reason quantitatively, read for meaning, and write original, analytic essays.

West Memphis School District uses literacy and math coaches to monitor the curriculum, improve instruction, and increase student learning. Chalk Talk: Helping Student's Become Writers

In addition to reading and mathematics, writing is also an extremely important skill that needs to be developed when children are young. Even though computers have made writing assignments for high school and college easier, children still must learn grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules. Journaling is an easy, creative plan to help your child improve his/her writing skills. Allow your child to choose a notebook they like, and get one for yourself in the process. Set up times to sit down and write together. Both you and your child will get a lot out of the shared experience.
