West Nipissing District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

West Nipissing’s schools use an instructional plan that follows guidelines for subject-area learning which have been established for all grade levels. Each subject is organized so that fundamental learning grows into a deeper understanding over the years. The elementary curriculum is designed to give students a lot of hands-on learning opportunities while the secondary curriculum offers both practical and theoretical extensions to the subjects. The enrichment and elective offerings also provide a similar experience and are organized using similar principles.

We currently cover the following West Nipissing-area school districts: Near North District School Board and Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Nipissing District Curriculum

In Science, the elementary framework is designed around life, earth, environmental and physical sciences. Students learn about the process of scientific inquiry and are introduced to technology as a scientific development. The Environmental Education initiatives have caused the development of many classes in that subject, and the demand for technology education has given rise to a range of technology-related courses. Students also may take Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with opportunities for advanced coursework.

The English curriculum has been broadly designed to address literacy, communication, and the development of language and analytic skills in all subject areas. There is a strong emphasis on literature, its craft, and the cultural understanding raised by reading and there is a strong focus on writing, how it can be developed, and the many purposes for writing. Students are given non-fiction to read, analyze, and respond to and are expected to have the formal skills to do so.

Chalk Talk: College Applications as a Sophomore

As a freshman, teens will have laid the foundation for their educational futures. In the sophomore year it is time for the student to begin focusing on activities. This includes extracurricular and summer activities. The teen should not be overwhelmed by the choices or by joining too many. Parents can help the teen find what they feel passionate about. Then try one or two to see if they fit this passion. Educationally, the student should be continuing to take strong classes that they can handle, so the activities will still find a place in the student’s life. When looking for an activity, don’t worry about the college application, instead decide if the activity will be fun and something that the teen will enjoy for a while. Help the teen to remember, even though their education is important, so is finding something they can enjoy to help them relax, also.
