Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Norriton District Curriculum

Currently, seminars are offered for gifted students in elementary through high school. Students can choose a topic or concentration and take that particular seminar during normal class hours when the seminar is offered. Next year the high school will be moving to offering a class for gifted students where they will receive academic credits rather than having to interrupt class to attend seminars.

There are English Language Learner resources for all students who need it at any grade level. Also, there are resources for parents of English Language Learners online and helpful resources in Spanish as well as English. There are also language courses and other opportunities for cultural learning and foreign exchange. The increased use of technology in the classroom, besides teaching students how to work with these emerging tools, also allows for students to reach out and communicate with students around the world and participate in cross-cultural learning experiences.

Chalk Talk: How to Do Good Research

Good research is at the foundation of many projects in many subjects. And the art of good research will carry you long after high school is over whether you are researching to find a good job, researching information on your next home, car, education/career choice, or other interest. So how do you get started? Now that the internet is so widely used, it might be a great place to start. Remember that some sites are good sources of information and some are not, so look for a legitimate author, date of publication, and information that shows the author is an authority on the topic. If a Google search doesn’t bring up what you’re looking for, think of other similar keywords that will get you the same information. For example: exercise, fitness and working out can all lead you to similar articles. Also, read more than one opinion. The more viewpoints you read, the clearer you will understand a given topic. And now that you have an idea about the topic, consult other sources that are authoritative on the topic such as books, documentaries, and people with experience. These tips will get you started on your research journey.
