Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Odessa District Curriculum

The science curriculum shows students how science can be found throughout the world, and beyond the world’s bounds. Students learn to look up at the sky when they begin to study clouds and their part in the weather they experience and in the water cycle. They then look beyond the clouds to study the planets, stars, comets and even more of space. They learn how to combine the history of explorers and the stars, plus how modern space exploration helps the world today.

Students at West Odessa Schools learn to read from the first years at school. By the time they enter middle school, they move beyond these basics to find out about different genres, an author’s point of view and voice, setting and more. In high school they then analyze different works of literature to compare what they say about a topic or a point in history. They also learn how to write in various creative and analytic styles and are able to use their reading as models of the craft of writing.

Chalk Talk: Overview of the Elementary Reading Curriculum

Through first grade, students learn some of the basics of sounding out words and learning how to read. In second grade this is built upon as students go from sounding out, or decoding, to finding out the mechanics behind reading. While they do this they also focus on comprehension skills. By the time they finish second grade, they will become much more fluent in reading and their sight vocabulary will grow. They also will be able to retell stories with more accuracy and enjoy reading independently. States may vary in their standards, but overall these are the skills that students become more comfortable with by the time they finish second grade. Once in third grade, students will have a wider variety of choices for independent reading and will begin to be able to recognize areas of interest in reading. They will also learn about informational texts and how it’s different from fiction. By fourth grade, reading assessments will become an important factor in the students educational progress and provide information regarding their progress.
