Elementary school education is provided for students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade in the Carroll County Public School System. The major areas of study at the elementary level are Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Integrated Language Arts. In Elementary English and Language Arts, students build on their abilities as they progress through the elementary grades. Students learn to read using phonics and other reading methods. As students progress they learn to improve their vocabulary, and their ability to write and use language. Students learn to read text, analyze and discuss it to develop their reading comprehension skills. Learning how to locate and use research materials is also part of the program.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Westminster District Curriculum

The Carroll County Public School System uses the Maryland State Curriculum as their foundation for teaching Math. Mathematics at the elementary level includes a focus on learning numbers, counting, mathematical processes such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Students also learn the base ten numbering system, how to solve word problems, and the basics of Algebra and Geometry.

At the middle school level, students move toward an understanding of higher level mathematics, and the comprehension of abstract mathematical concepts. Middle School students learn measurement tools, equations, fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and basic geometry and algebraic concepts. High school students are required to take at least three credits of Math including Algebra and Geometry. The focus in Math is to help students learn to use and apply mathematical concepts in real life.
