Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wheat Ridge District Curriculum

The Colorado Academic Standards provides a comprehensive view of learning for each subject. In Math, the curriculum specifies the skills in operations, algebraic thinking, geometry and measurement, and data analysis that students need to develop. These skills include working with equations, applying theorems, and creating models of mathematic thought that can help in the solving of abstract problems. Students are also taught how to communicate their mathematical thinking.

The Science curriculum is broad and encompasses areas of earth science, biology, chemistry, physical science, engineering and technology and help students understand all facets of the subject. Students learn from an early age the process of scientific investigation and validation of theories and also see how changes brought about by science and technology impact the world. Scientific literacy is also an area of focus and students are expected to be conversant in the role of science in their society.

Keeping Informed: Recent Wheat Ridge Educational News

  • Engage Jeffco Schools - Engage Jeffco Schools is an online forum for students, family and community members and the district to interact about issues that are important to the school. The district uses this to seek feedback and to provide information about what is going on in the schools, and as a way to generate discussion of these topics.
  • Business Partners - School community business partnerships are a big help to the overall functioning of the district. Whether it is local business providing support or volunteers to assist in the classroom, or providing work learning or job shadowing experiences to students, these partnerships can help the district tap into extra resources that will help the students.
  • Parent Involvement - The district emphasizes parent involvement with students about their education and in terms of guiding the direction the district takes in program and service planning. There are advisory committees and parent teacher organizations that parents can join in and always plenty of opportunities to go into a classroom and assist in student learning there!

Chalk Talk: Science Learning in the 21st Century

With all the scientific advances of the last decades, science curriculum in each state is challenged to keep up with current news, event, learning and debates. The curriculum mandates the skills and knowledge in each subject that students will master, but also is flexible enough to allow teachers to combine current scientific information into classroom lessons. The curriculum sets an expectation that students be able to understand the interaction between science and society and be able to discuss the changes caused by scientific innovation. This requirement helps to keep daily learning in the science classroom current and for students to have knowledge that will open doors for them in scientific fields if they choose.
