Chalk Talk: A Lesson In Democracy
Sure, students learn a lot about voting and responsible citizenship in civics and social studies classes, but when they are below voting age they rarely get a chance to put those lessons to use. Parents’ can change this by making home life more democratic. That is not to say that parents should let children have a say about everything. However, parents can let children vote on some things. For instance, if a family is going out to a restaurant parents can put the choice of a restaurant to a vote. If a family is planning a weekend activity like going swimming or going to a park the family can put that to a vote, too. Not only will this help children learn to make important decisions and accept they won’t always win the vote, but it will also show them that their voices can be heard and can make a difference.
