Educating Our Parents: Understanding the White Rock District Curriculum

The Los Alamos Public School District has recently implemented the Common Core Curriculum standards that have been approved for use in the state of New Mexico and most other states in the country. The new standards focus on providing a set standard of educational attainment for students in the areas of English and Language Arts and Mathematics. In Mathematics, the focus is on students learning core math skills such as computation, algebra, geometry, proportional reasoning, measurement, and statistics so that they are math literate by the time they graduate high school.

In English and Language Arts, students are expected to learn to read, write, speak and listen and be able to communicate effectively both vocally and in writing. Students are exposed to different types of reading material such as literature and informational text so they are prepared for the types of reading they might do in college or on the job. In addition, students work on gaining knowledge in the areas of critical analysis, reading for content, and problem solving.
