Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wilkes-Barre District Curriculum

Each child in Grades K-6 takes part in the Reading for Success program, which is based on cooperative learning and working together in teams. The foundational skills are built upon in a wide range of literature courses in middle and high school, including College Prep and Advanced Placement courses in English, History, and World Languages. Writing is an essential component of Language Arts learning, and students are taught how to use a process for producing thoughtful pieces of written work.

The Math curriculum follows a similar progression, with core skills in Everyday Math in Grades 1 to 6 followed by more advanced courses in middle and high school. Students can choose College Prep courses where they follow a traditional academic track or one geared toward careers in business or technology. For example, students can take courses in computer science, probability and statistics, physics, biology, or chemistry no matter what their plans for the future.
