Chalk Talk: How to Choose a College

Making the choice between colleges requires weighing a variety of important factors. Now, more than ever, money plays into where your child may or may not go to school. The availability of scholarships, grants, loans, or other funding sources may make one school more attractive than another. The campus environment is also important to consider. Students should feel at ease at their college, both in class and in the dorms. When taking campus tours, ask about campus life activities and chat with any available students to get a feel for the types of things the college does to help its students adjust to college life. There are academic factors involved as well. While a school may have an overall good reputation, individual departments may not. As a result, meeting with faculty members who teach in your child’s major is a good course of action so you can determine the quality of education your child will receive.
