Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Willard District Curriculum
Willard’s elementary level math curriculum introduces students to a variety of mathematical concepts. Students learn basic geometric skills, including reasoning with various shapes. Learners work with fractions as well, and acquire the ability to think in terms of proportional relationships. Operations and base ten are also introduced. Students learn place value and develop the ability to perform multi-digit arithmetic. Multiplication and division are learned as well, with students learning how to multiply and divide within 100. Patterns of arithmetic are identified, and students work on solving problems using four types of operations.
The high school visual and performing arts curriculum in Willard includes the dramatic and theatre arts. Students in drama courses learn the ins and outs of theatre performance. Learners spend time analyzing lines, determining methods to effectively deliver their lines, and examining the playwright’s intent. Students practice performance skills like posture and stage presence.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose a College
Making the choice between colleges requires weighing a variety of important factors. Now, more than ever, money plays into where your child may or may not go to school. The availability of scholarships, grants, loans, or other funding sources may make one school more attractive than another. The campus environment is also important to consider. Students should feel at ease at their college, both in class and in the dorms. When taking campus tours, ask about campus life activities and chat with any available students to get a feel for the types of things the college does to help its students adjust to college life. There are academic factors involved as well. While a school may have an overall good reputation, individual departments may not. As a result, meeting with faculty members who teach in your child’s major is a good course of action so you can determine the quality of education your child will receive.
