Williams Lake District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

School District No. 27 bases its educational program on the provincial curriculum and locally developed electives and career-related courses. The curriculum follows a progressive design where student learning is centered on major themes within each subject and students move toward increasingly complex work as they near graduation. Preparing students for post-secondary life is one of the main goals of the district, and to that end programs in character education and community service are also part of the overall expectations.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Williams Lake District Curriculum

The social studies curriculum helps students explore geography, politics, government, economics, culture and society and develop an awareness about the world. Civics courses instill an appreciation for the rights and responsibilities of citizens as well as an understanding of the role of government in protecting the citizenry. This subject is also one in which students are able to conduct independent research in different aspects of the world that interest them - places, people, historical events - and gain important research skills.

The arts curriculum allows students to explore visual and performing arts, and learn about the creative and technical sides of these fields. Students learn about aesthetics, and acquire the ability to describe and utilize techniques to manipulate materials into their artistic vision. As students age, they gain the skills required to produce fine art, including developing works for show in an exhibition. The performing arts curriculum also includes an investigation into the role of music in the human experience and how music can evoke emotion.

Chalk Talk: Authentic Assessments

Students face many tests and assessments throughout their education, some causing greater anxiety than others. Authentic assessments are used to help measure what a student knows, can learn, and gives them a chance to demonstrate mastery of a topic. Most authentic assessments are project based and students generally produce some type of work - long essay, performance piece, scientific experiment - that represents the best of their ability. What's particularly useful about authentic assessments are that they offer many teachable moments as students go through the process of planning and executing their project. By and large, students are more likely to remember an authentic piece of work they completed as they reflect on their academic successes.
