Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Winchester District Curriculum
The Common Core State Standards allow all schools across the state to share best practices and implement new strategies to benefit all students in every district. In English, the standards focus on literacy not only in literature but across all subjects and even current events. It will also focus on writing, listening, and comprehension skills that will payoff for students both in the workforce and in college. In Mathematics, fewer topics are covered to provide a more in depth and deeper understanding of the subject material. In Science, the goals are to increase the literacy to allow students at all levels to be able to read and analyze material and form intelligent conclusions.
The district has an improvement plan in place designed to create the best learning environment possible for its students. Technology learning, elective courses and enrichment opportunities provide additional opportunities for students.

Chalk Talk: The Benefits of Pre-School
Many parents choose to spend those precious early years with their children at home, often up until their first day of kindergarten. While the benefits of that quality time with mom, dad, or even grandparents is fantastic, so too are the skills only learned in a structured classroom environment. Whether in a good daycare that doesn’t just babysit but actually has curriculum from infants to school-age children or a formal school setting, pre-school can have lasting benefits and set the stage for future success in elementary school. From the social aspects of getting along with a large group of diverse children, to listening skills, arts and crafts, songs, games, and play. Even simple life lessons like being able to tie their own shoes and put on their own coat are things that will be greatly appreciated by their kindergarten teacher.
