Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Windham District Curriculum

Students learn the basics of literacy learning recognition of letters and how to write them, as well as learning the sounds of each letter. Students learn listening skills be hearing stories read out loud and answering questions about the stories. Teachers use different strategies to help students to achieve a strong Literacy foundation so that they can be successful in school and in their future lives of employment and college. Also, by showing the students where they can look for examples of the writing they need, they are given the tools to face any writing expectations that comes their way in college or in a career.

Another very important subject in the curriculum used in Windham public schools is math. Mathematics is part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) program that prepares students not only for college, but for the competitive career field decisions that will face them upon high school graduation

Chalk Talk: Learn With Your Kids—Play Together!

Believe it or not, when kids play they are learning. Don’t be worried when you see your kids playing make believe. Join them in their play and let them learn with you. Make believe is the way kids practice for grown-up life. Encourage their play and provide costumes and other items to help them play. Have a tea party with pretend tea or fly to the moon in a rocket ship. This is where their interests, talents, and curiosity will emerge from and it should be nurtured. Most toys are representational and they can also be an insight into how your child is feeling about themselves and their environment. Playing also gives children a chance to make choices and decisions, which are key developmental assets to continually build upon. You will be amazed at what you learn from your kids!
