Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wolcott District Curriculum
The Connecticut Common Core State Standards focuses on increasing the rigor across all subjects from English to math to science. In English, the standards focus on literacy not only in literature but across all subjects as well as current events. In Mathematics, fewer topics are covered to provide a more in depth and deeper understanding of the subject material. The Science curriculum includes goals to increase the literacy of students so they can read and analyze scientific material and form rational conclusions.
At the middle and high school level students are divided into academic teams in each of the core content areas of Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies. The teams are uniquely focused for the optimal student learning and engagement. Honors and advanced classes are offered for gifted students and there is a focus on differentiation in all lessons. Each grade level incorporates lesson that bring together several different content areas. This method allows the students to reach a more in depth understanding at many different levels.
