Chalk Talk: Grading for Learning

Some public school systems have moved away from traditional grading systems in favor of systems that grade for learning. Grading for learning is simple: students are graded on their performance on predetermined standards. This type of system is a reaction against traditional systems that tend to assign grades to life skills, rather than content knowledge. For example, in a traditional grading system, students might be penalized for handing an assignment in late. While children should learn to hand in their work on time, penalizing them for not doing so doesn’t reflect that child’s knowledge of the content. Grading for learning systems seek to rectify that situation by focusing the grades a student earns on their mastery of the actual content in the course.
