Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Worthington District Curriculum

The physical science curriculum in Worthington introduces students to various concepts related to matter and energy. Learners develop the ability to distinguish between a solid, liquid, and gas. The role of heating and cooling in changing the state of matter is explored as well. The transfer of heat energy between hot and cold objects is examined, as are the various methods of producing heat energy. Students create a simple circuit using wires, batteries, and light bulbs in order to better understand electrical energy.

Worthington’s health sciences curriculum seeks to help students develop a deeper understanding of health-related topics. Students discuss how their friends, family, and other social groups can influence their health decision-making processes. Learners identify the healthy and unhealthy influences in their lives, noting how they can resist unhealthy influences by being assertive. Dietary information is also included in the curriculum, with students gaining an appreciation for the types and amounts of foods they should intake each day.

Chalk Talk: Grading for Learning

Some public school systems have moved away from traditional grading systems in favor of systems that grade for learning. Grading for learning is simple: students are graded on their performance on predetermined standards. This type of system is a reaction against traditional systems that tend to assign grades to life skills, rather than content knowledge. For example, in a traditional grading system, students might be penalized for handing an assignment in late. While children should learn to hand in their work on time, penalizing them for not doing so doesn’t reflect that child’s knowledge of the content. Grading for learning systems seek to rectify that situation by focusing the grades a student earns on their mastery of the actual content in the course.
