Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wyandotte District Curriculum

Instruction begins at a young age with several early childhood programs that give students a solid introduction to literacy skills. As students enter elementary school, they will explore the concept of phonics, how sounds make words, and then how those words form sentences to make meaning. Students will then move on to learn strategies that will teach them how to dissect the text that they are reading for information and comprehension. The groundwork laid allows students to delve into more complex texts.

Another focus of the Common Core standards is preparing students to be successful in both the college and career world. In order to accomplish this goal, students are required to take at least one online class to familiarize themselves with how most college courses are being taught. Students may also choose to participate in the Career Pathways program that individualizes and specializes courses based on a student’s future career interests.

Chalk Talk: The Role of a Guidance Counselor

Guidance counselors can be found in elementary, middle, and high schools across the country. They perform many functions in school buildings that help students both personally and academically. A guidance counselor’s main job is to act as an advocate for the social well-being of students. This can take many forms from whole-group lessons to one-on-one counseling. Most elementary guidance counselors teach monthly social skill classes to all students, while middle and high school counselors may put on building-wide assemblies. Another function is to moderate any issues that arise between students by teaching problem solving skills and contacting parents if need be. Guidance counselors also help high school students with their career and college choices by helping students obtain college applications, making sure students have fulfilled all graduation requirements, and teaching interview skills. There are many roles a guidance counselor plays, but most importantly they're there for the emotional well-being of each student.
