Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wyoming District Curriculum

Elementary school students in Wyoming participate in a social studies curriculum that introduces them to various topics. Students learn about local history, which allows them to gain perspective on how their current environment and community has changed over the course of time. Using various maps, students delve into geography. Children learn about agriculture, industry, and other practices that are dependent upon natural resources such as water, timber, minerals, and good soil. The manner in which humans have modified their environment is also explored. Students learn about transportation systems, dams, housing developments, and other human-made systems that have made life easier.

The dramatic arts curriculum in Wyoming offers high school students the opportunity to hone their acting and production skills. Students examine various theatrical styles, explaining how each helps actors to convey purpose and meaning. Learners analyze historical and modern theatrical works as well, noting similarities and differences, and evaluating them for effectiveness in communicating moral, ethical, or philosophical issues.

Chalk Talk: Why Students Need Math Skills

Not everyone will grow up to be an accountant, but regardless, everyone needs a strong grasp of basic mathematical concepts. Math teaches valuable skills beyond being able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Math teaches students how to see the bigger picture, find solutions to problems, analyze situations, and foresee long-term consequences. Being able to determine how well or how poorly an investment is doing is just one example of these skills put to good use in everyday life. Calculating the tip at dinner is another example of math skills needed in the real world. Math also helps students learn how to utilize important tools, such as calculators and measuring devices. Math is needed to prepare meals, determine monthly budgets, and evaluate athletic performance, such as keeping track of one’s progress while running. From being financially responsible to figuring out how long a trip will take, the everyday uses of math skills are many.
