Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Yarmouth District Curriculum
The district’s Office of Instruction is responsible for all aspects of teaching and learning, including developing and revising the curriculum to adhere to state and national standards and putting in place the proper professional development that allows teachers to successfully implement the curriculum. This includes a regularly reviewed Professional Development Plan for the district. The Office of Instruction consists of a comprehensive team of professionals that touches on the majority of content areas and remedial services available.
Reading Recovery is a short-term intervention program integrated for first grade students who are having severe challenges with early literacy skills; these students work one-on-one for 30 minutes daily with specially trained teachers over a 12- to 20-week period. The district’s coaches collaborate with all of the teachers and help them implement best practices in their subject.

Chalk Talk: Scholastic: An Educational Website for All
When we think of Scholastic, many of us remember when we eagerly awaited our teachers passing out a catalogue with a wide selection of books to order from each month. However, Scholastic is doing much more than producing book order forms and fairs—it runs a website that caters to teachers, parents, and children alike. For teachers, there are a wide array of literacy resources, including lesson plans, printable worksheets, and discussion guides. There are many professional resources with strategies for organization, classroom management, literacy instruction, assessment, and more; this includes a dedicated website to help out new educators. Perhaps the best part of Scholastic is that it helps teachers build their classroom libraries by allowing them to search for popular books by grade level equivalency and interest by grade and providing additional supports on building classroom libraries. Parents can find books for their children to read by browsing book lists by grade, reading parent reviews of children’s books, and searching for books by selecting their child’s age and a topic of interest.
