Educating Our Parents: Understanding the York District Curriculum

My reasons for being away have absolutely nothing to do with you. Kindergarten through 12th grade has a wide-ranging Mathematics curriculum. Numerical concepts taught in the primary grades include the communication of theories and models related to numbers, communicating number sense concepts using different methods to reason, solve problems, and relate these to real-world experiences by making connections.

The Reading coursework is also comprehensive and contains the objectives of focusing on print and structures, awareness of the individual phonemes within single and multi-syllabic words, analyzing words by using context clues and new vocabulary, and reading with fluency and accuracy while comprehending the text. Writing is also an essential element of the curriculum and students are instructed in ways to communicate within each subject, and are taught to use a process by which they fully develop their ideas in writing.

Chalk Talk: Teaching Math Across Disciplines

In order for Mathematics to be fully understood, using math concepts in many areas of the school day can be beneficial. Mathematics can be a challenging subject. When integrated with science, for example, in measurement concepts, equations, and experimental methods, it can be reinforced. Math can be linked with history, especially when studying famous people who developed mathematical concepts, map skills of longitude and latitude, and economics lessons on saving money.
