Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ypsilanti Charter Township District Curriculum
The use of quantities is one part of the mathematics curriculum. When the students are in elementary the students begin to learn the basics, such as length, units, area and volume. Then in high school their knowledge goes further with acceleration, currency conversion, rates and derived quantities. Students discover how to use this information in everyday lives, also. This includes when figuring interest. They also become familiar with quantification which is useful in areas of science such as evaporation.
Students learn how to read information text as part of the English curriculum at Ypsilanti Charter Township Schools. They learn how to read this kind of literature in search of evidence of what the text states as well as how to cite this information. The students also learn how to find the central idea and how to follow its development throughout the work. They learn to look for how it begins and is refined. The author’s analysis of ideas is also looked at to see the order facts are stated and how each is connected to the other. They then learn how to explain the individual items.

Chalk Talk: Role Models
All students have role models at some time in their lives. These role models may be celebrities, however, parents are a more consistent role model for their children. Some parents may feel this to be overwhelming, but all they need to do is to create positive ways to influence their children. Some of these are by sharing their values with their children which helps to build self-respect and self-esteem. Parents can also show children leadership roles so the child can see how to step out of the comfortable shoes of a follower to take initiative. Children also need to show love and respect to others. Finally, parents need to demonstrate the importance of care when using medications and alcohol. By beginning with these ideas, parents can easily build on them to find other positive ways to influence their children.
