Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Zionsville District Curriculum

Students in the district take courses in physical, earth, and life science, as well as technology and engineering. In elementary school, students study animals’ habitats and investigate sound and light. Middle school students are able to explore the solar system and matter. In high school, students study the Periodic Table and the human body. All students are also expected to develop scientific literacy as well.

Math work in this curriculum is done in a workbook which contains daily pages with practice for newly learned skills along with mastered skills that need to be maintained. Real-world activities also play a large part in this curriculum with students participating in individual and group scenarios. Students also use quite a bit of technology in this curriculum for both practice and assessment on a daily basis. The software program used for Carnegie Math is linked directly to the teacher in order to provide an accurate picture of each student’s progress.

Chalk Talk: Why Extracurricular Activities Are Important

Academics are important for every student but extracurricular activities can be fun and educational as well! Sports, choir club, drama club, and student government are just a few examples of activities outside of class that students can participate in. Time management, stress relief, and social skills can all be improved by participating, as well. In fact, it’s been proven that students who participate in extracurricular activities have higher academic scores! These students are able to practice doing their best both inside and outside of the classroom. For high school students, these types of activities look impressive on college applications. Extracurricular activities produce a well-rounded person, which is what colleges are looking for. Communication skills and the ability to work in groups also improve, which carries over into life outside of school. Remember, extracurricular activities are a privilege. Keep those grades up and see just how far you can go!
