Chalk Talk: Promoting Reading at the High School Level
As students move into high school, they tend to lose interest in reading. Teachers have discovered that there is a two-part technique to bring high school students back to books: time and choice. Children in elementary and middle school always have time in school to read novels, but in high school they do not. It is very important for high school students to have at least 20 minutes of time each day that is dedicated to reading a book that they choose on their own. Students need to have access to a rich variety of books that are of interest to them and those books need to be accessible in more places than just the school library; so, teachers need to have classroom libraries for their students. Once teens have time to read and a good choice of books, they will develop the healthy habit of reading.
