Royal Ontario Museum

CN Tower

The CN Tower is a 553.3 metre high communication and observation tower that is located in Downtown Toronto. Completed in 1976, the CN Tower stands on the grounds that used be known as Railway Lands. Its name “CN” stands for Canadian National which is the railway company that decided to built the tower in the first place. The CN Tower held the record for the world’s tallest free standing tower for 32 years until 2007 where is was overtaken by the Canton Tower and Burj Khalifa. Now it is ninth tallest free standing tower in the world but remains the tallest free-standing tower in the Western Hemisphere. It was also in 1995 that the CN Tower was declared as one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers and belongs to the World as well as belonging to the World Federation of Great Towers. Toronto is located by the north shore of Lake Ontario and is the largest urban centre in all of Canada. Shortly after the ice age, people began to reside in the area that is now called the “City of Toronto”. The urban community of Toronto began back in 1793 when the “Town of York” was founded by the British colonial officials. At the time of its finding, the “Town of York” was on the Upper Canadian frontier. The “City of Toronto” was established in 1834 with the growth of the backwoods village. Toronto is home to Centre Island. The cool thing about this Toronto Island is that is rests on top of a nine hundred acre long floating sand bag. Babe Ruth, a professional American baseball player, hit his very first professional home run on this island. Centre Island is also the biggest car-free network in all of North America.

Toronto is known for its film festival. The Toronto International Film Festival, also known as TIFF, is considered the second most prestigious film festival in the world, the first being Cannes. The Toronto International Film Festival was founded in 1976 and is inclusive of various forms of productions. This includes local films, independent films, famous Hollywood blockbusters and etc.

Toronto can be described as a multicultural city. You can walk down the streets of Toronto and hear over 180 different languages. Over a third of Toronto’s population is multilingual and can speak another language in addition to English or French.
