Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Calgary District Curriculum
The curriculum used in Calgary is developed at the provincial level and provides standards for learning for students in the Calgary Public Schools and local Catholic Schools. The curriculum identifies what skill sets and knowledge areas students need to develop within each subject. For instance, in math, students are expected to become knowledgeable in increasingly advanced topics in algebra, geometry, and statistics. Functions are presented to algebra students and students acquire the skills necessary to make connections between and among multiple representations of functions.
The curriculum provide targets that students are expected to learn at each grade level; the provincial wide standardized assessments are aligned to these grade level standards. Alberta Education updates their curriculum yearly to ensure that the standards are preparing students for their futures. These standards describe the general outcomes expected for students in the subject, it also allows teachers creativity in their lesson design while providing oversight on learning standards for all students in the province.

Chalk Talk: Expectations of a Fine Arts Curriculum
A visual and performing arts curriculum focuses not just on performance and creation of art, but also on knowing and using appropriate artistic resources and analyzing and critiquing art works. In music, students learn about various instruments that are at their disposal, and learn how to play instruments with proficiency. Learners also become versed in utilizing current technologies to create or change sounds. Students work on reading music as well, with advanced students learning to site read and compose their own music. Critique of musical works is another central component of the arts curriculum. Students identify the strengths and weaknesses of music, including their own work and the work of others. Providing constructive criticism gives learners the opportunity to grow as musicians and also allows them to develop the sensitivity to provide constructive feedback. Their evaluative skills also allow students to identify the manners in which pitch, timbre, and loudness can be altered.
