In addition, this school is joint with Antelope Valley College providing courses to better prepare students for continuous education. In that case, this early college high school follows the Antelope Valley Union High School District. Graduates of this high school have furthered their academic careers at MIT, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, UCLA, and other Ivy League Schools. This school largely focuses on advancing students in the subjects of Math, Science, and engineering as part of the rise in demand of jobs in these fields. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lancaster District Curriculum

The Math curriculum organizes a yearly progression of teaching in numerical operations, algebraic operations, geometry and measurement, and data analysis. In Language Arts the curriculum aims for the development of the skills of reading literary and non-fiction texts, the writing process, and other communication skills. This framework promotes critical thinking, problem-solving and other advanced thinking skills as students deepen their knowledge yearly.

In the Sciences, the curriculum covers earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science and technology areas. In the other academic subjects like Social Studies and History, Languages, and other specialized programs there are curriculum frameworks that describe the expected learning outcomes of the program.

The city of Lancaster is located approximately 61 miles north from the urban city of Los Angeles. Characterized as a charter city in the Los Angeles county, the city sits Antelope Valley in the western Mojave desert in Southern California. In 2013 it was named the 31st largest city in California and is part of a twin city complex with a city just south of it called Palmdale. Combined together due to its close proximity and constant growth this city has become on of the most important cities that is situated in Antelope Valley region.

Like many cities in the west, the city of Lancaster first started off as a settlement due to the Southern Pacific Railroad. Since then, the population of Lancaster has grown to 168,049 (according to the Greater Antelope Valley) with people of various cultural and professional backgrounds. According to the 2013 census, there were 30.1% of residents under the age of 18, 11.9% of people between the ages of 18-24, 27.2% of people between the ages of 25-44, 22.7% of people aged 45-64 and 8.1% of residents who are of 65 years of age or older. From the same census in 2010 it was also found that the the median household income for a family in Lancaster was $50,193.

Despite being a longtime major settlement in Antelope Valley, it wasn’t until 1977 where the residents of Lancaster could call their growing town a city. In fact last year, the people in Lancaster had just celebrated their 40th anniversary of cityhood. Despite the short time as a city, the city of Lancaster is one that filled with rich history and  fun for the entire family.

Antelope Valley Indian Museum

Located on 15701 East Avenue M in Lancaster California, the Antelope Valley Indian Museum stands as a reminder of the various American Indian groups that once lived in the Great Basin. The exhibits provide and interaction and interpretive emphasis on the American Indian groups of the Southwest, Great basin and California regions as well as describing the history of the trade corridor linking the 3 regions together. The museum displays over 3000 objects, many which are rare and perfectly describes the life in Antelope Valley in those times almost 4000 years ago. Lancaster Museum of Art and History

Founded in 1986 the Lancaster Museum of Art and History stands to promote awareness and appreciation for art, history and culture in the Antelope Valley. Through their dynamic and exhibitions, community engagements and education programs for those of all ages, they hope to spread the history and culture of Antelope Valley to those who visit any one of their 3 sites – the Museum of Art and History, MOAH:Cedar and the Western Hotel Museum. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve

Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is located approximately 15 miles away from Highway 14 near the city of Lancaster. Every spring, the reserve is brought to life with the flora and fauna that is present in the Mojave Desert Grassland habitat. Like its name the reserve is covered with a flourish of poppies like its name. With eight miles of trails for you to explore and wheelchair accessible, the park is a beautiful place to visit and explore in any season. On the trail are rest stops where benches are available for those who chose to sit down and enjoy the beauty of mother nature. If visitors are lucky they may be able spot animals such as meadowlarks, lizards, gopher snakes and even coyotes or bobcats. Interesting Facts

The name “Lancaster” was given to the city by Mr. M.L. Wicks, who was a real estate developer. Mr. Wicks began a Scottish settlement of approximately 150 people in the Valley and this location acted more as a permanent home for these settlers. Mr. Wicks decided to name the city Lancaster after his previous home city Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The Lancaster area was developed thanks to the influence of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The completion of this railroad between Los Angeles and San Francisco in 1876 led to more settlers. After the completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad, the Gilwyn was constructed leading to further population growth in the city of Lancaster. The Gilwyn is now called the “Western Hotel.”

The prosperity of Lancaster grew when gold was found in the northern hills in 1898. This gold attracted the attention of several people who were interested in claiming this wealth. In the same year, the discovery of borax in the mountains surrounding Antelope Valley happened. This discovery lead to the development of the largest open-pit borax mine in the world.

Travel by air was introduced to Lancaster in the 1930s. The first airplane was brought to the city and the Air Force in Lancaster began conducting flight tests at Muroc Air Base. This caused Lancaster’s economy to grow. The now Edwards Air Force Base heavily contributed to Lancaster’s economy with its famous space shuttle landings, aviatrix Pancho Barnes and Happy Bottom Riding Club. Today, the Edwards Air Force Base has programs in the Air Force Flight Test Center that continue to make great contributions to Lancaster’s economy. Due to the prosperity of the Air Force, it is not unusual to see a couple of planes in the sky at a time when you are in Lancaster.

In 1977, Lancaster stopped being politically influenced by the Los Angeles county and became a cityhood. The citizens in Lancaster longed for better connections with their body that makes the policies and the body of local control. With the help of the Citizens for Incorporation, their wish came true. The title of cityhood gave way for a new community values and the practice of traditional rights of self governance.
