EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
My educational philosophy begins with this question “What special skills and knowledge learned in the classroom will make students life-long learners?” A style of teaching should be based on learning for personal interests and the type of learning that sparks one’s inner creativity
Teaching and learning should be embraced by both the instructor and student in multiple ways, with the most obvious being through audio and visual tools. However, an instructor should also incorporate kinesthetic methods of teaching that engage a student’s critical thinking and problem solving skills.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
I graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a BS in Biology and minor in Chemistry. Additionally, I was in optometry school for about 5 years to obtain a doctorate degree in optometry.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
As a Kaplan instructor, I taught pre-optometry and pre-denistry students the material that appeared on those tests used to enter into the health professional school programs. I also tutored for the first two or three years of the Big Brother Big Sister program I was a part of.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
I was a Big Brother Big Sister mentor for seven or eight years. I tutored for the first 2-3 years at school and also introduced art projects into our 1 hour sessions. I enjoyed taking my mentee on field trips to the park and to see national sports leagues play in the summer.
