Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Rochester District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum is based on the Common Core Standards which focuses on literacy across all subjects, conducting research, text exemplars and performance tasks. The Math curriculum centers on grade-specific skills and concepts within areas like algebra, geometry, analysis of data using probability and statistics, and moves toward increasingly specific math courses. The development of core competencies such as reasoning and communicating thought are emphasized in both subjects.

The Science curriculum provides a framework for grade-appropriate learning as well, focusing on developing scientifically literate citizens. The Science coursework provides each teacher with opportunities to create a problem solving and inquiry-based learning environment. The opportunities presented to students to learn and create are bolstered by increasing amounts of technology in the schools. The outcomes allow for students to be able to use and create with technology, which provides students with the keys to innovation.

New York Tutors

I believe that, with proper instruction and the right methodology, all children can learn. The demands of our modern society require that teachers are highly proficient. Therefore, we have a commitment with our school communities and parents to provide a high quality education to our students.
I believe there are three pillars of success: (1) know yourself, (2) know your students, and (3) know your content. Without one of these pillars, success cannot fully be achieved. My master’s program (educational psychology) has helped me create a more reflective self. Before I can teach and know my students, I had to completely know myself. This is an ongoing process and always will be as we are constantly changing and growing every day.
I believe that outstanding teaching is a combination of compassion, knowledge, and the ability to respond to students’ cultural and learning differences in ways that celebrate and nurture their academic and personal growth. Consequently, I strive to balance my knowledge of subject matter with innovative ways of reaching my students.

Chalk Talk: Playing by the Rules

People often say, “I’m a math person, not an English person,” or vice versa. The two actually have more in common than you think! Those who say they are math-minded enjoy the set rules of math: 1+1 = 2, never 3 or 4. English feels too subjective—too open to interpretation. Reading and writing about literature may fall into that category, but even a mathematician can appreciate the set rules of grammar and punctuation. They are consistent, they are logical, and they are easy to learn and implement. Take the time to learn them, and, before you know it, you’ll feel compelled to proofread every e-mail and text you receive (much to the dismay of your friends).
