Educating Our Parents: Understanding the St. Albert District Curriculum

The curriculum in Alberta is rigorous, based on expectations for learning at each grade level, and diverse in its offerings that prepare students for next generation work and learning challenges. The curriculum has been developed so that there is a logical progression of skills which students learn each year and it is revised regularly to ensure that the knowledge students are expected to gain is relevant.

Core subjects remain a critical focus of learning. Students develop abilities in Math, Science, Languages and Communication, and are able to branch out into different subject areas as they progress in school. Beside the goals of procedural proficiency and general knowledge development in the subjects, students also begin to develop the means to reason abstractly, draw scientific conclusions, and analyze the validity of text-based information. Critical studies in media, technology and other areas that have become a part of our lives are also focused upon, allowing students to connect their learning to the goings-on of the world around them.

Alberta Tutors

I believe anybody can excel academically in anything, given the right mentor, who is able to draw from their strengths and strengthen their weaknesses.
Learn by doing is my philosophy. Particularly with subjects like Math or Physics, there is no guarantee that students truly understand a particular topic until they try solving problems and succeed at that. Learn by having fun is also part of my philosophy. With younger students in particular I like to conduct very interactive, activity-based tutoring sessions.
I am dedicated to helping students develop and reach their potential by facilitating a positive, supportive, and creative learning environment for their growth, well-being and achievement. I intend to utilize 21st Century Learning and appropriate pedagogy within an inquiry-based environment to do this.

St. Albert Botanic Park

In 1990, two St. Albert citizens with a love of horticulture formed what is now a 5 acre botanical garden. A former mayor and retired city landscape planner had a vision to create a garden where the results of growing all sorts of flora could be shared with the community. Today, the garden is home to various species of plants, such as roses, Asiatic lilies, peonies, lilacs, daylilies, as well as vegetables and annuals. The entire garden is maintained by volunteers and two summer employees. It has taken a lot of time and effort from the community and other garden lovers for the park to grow to this size. Membership is open to the general public, and no prerequisite knowledge is required. Both of the original founders are active members of the garden, and happily tell tales of the garden’s past and origins. They also run events such as the Mother’s day rose sale, Canada Day strawberry tea, a yearly rose show, picnic in the park, and Christmas in October. Adult education classes are also offered in the spring and fall. For more information, please visit their website here.

Chalk Talk: Ways to Develop Critical Thinking Skills

Critical thinking skills are developed through the opportunities students have to study topics deeply. Extensive reading brings about the ability to decode and interpret meaning in text, which are important critical thinking skills. The understanding of how to solve different types of problems, and understanding the probability of occurrences lends to the types of quantitative, abstract reasoning that people do. When students form and test a scientific hypothesis, the processing of evaluating and testing assumptions heightens critical thinking skills.
