EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
I strive to teach my students writing and reading skills that will enable them to be successful learners and communicators. I believe that literacy is one of the great keys to self realization, and I try to give my students the tools they need to reach that goal. The linguistic skills I seek to develop in students through tutoring are the same skills they will need to be successful professionally and in higher education.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
I studied English and Criminal Sociology at Cleveland State University. Upon graduation, I volunteered as an education advocate in Americorps and served City Year Cleveland as a literacy coordinator. I then spent two years at Miami University studying an MA in Writing, and I am presently pursuing an MFA in Fiction at Chatham University in Pittsburgh.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have taught students ranging from 9th grade to adult in both classroom instruction and tutoring settings. My success as a college instructor led to my being selected to teach introductory Creative Writing at Miami University, which was one of the most rewarding teaching experiences of my life. Seeing my students unlock their creative potential through fiction and poetry was incredibly uplifting.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
I pursue fiction writing and blogging in my spare time. I also serve as a consulting editor and book reviewer to a few magazines and journals. I enjoy traveling and a good book.
