EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

I believe in social equality, and I think the first step to achieving it is creating an equal playing field in education. I don’t think ‘smart’ or ‘dumb’ exists (there are 100 billion neurons in each and every human brain!). I think every student needs and deserves to be inspired by those who aim to teach them, to be encouraged and helped to discover who they are – taught to believe in the vast potential they each possess to achieve great things in the world.

Every person on earth has unique gifts and strengths. Teaching is about drawing those out; laying out ‘the fundamentals’ in plain English, but also going beyond that, where the student is excited, willing and receptive to do so.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

I grew up reading books, very much an introvert. I’ve always been drawn to the power of words and language. Spanish was my first language, and English (as well as foreign romance languages, particularly French) were the subjects that came naturally to me; where I excelled in school. Law school taught me to write (and think) clearly and effectively. Williams taught me to write ‘poetically’, lyrically. These days I enjoy both analytical and creative writing.

I received my Bachelor’s Degree in English and a J.D. certification subsequently.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I was an English teacher for rising 5th graders in high school through the Summerbridge program for gifted inner city New Orleans kids. I’ve tutored students in English for both creative and analytical writing, and also for critical thinking / reading.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

I’m currently writing a novel. I enjoy conversations with strangers, with friends, really anyone I meet; especially discussing philosophy and ‘life questions’ in a down-to-earth, accessible way. I like helping people. I like solving problems. I’m also a singer (for fun, not for money).

STANDARDIZED TEST RESULTS

I received a score of 34 on my ACT exam and a 1530 out of a possible 1600 on my SAT exam (before the exam changed). I also received a score of 170 out of 180 on my LSAT exam.
