EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
I believe that learning is a life-long journey and I try to instill the students with whom I work with an excitement for that journey. There are basics that we all need to succeed in life and I try to help students to acquire these fundamental building blocks in a way that is sensitive to their particular needs and sensibilities.
I also try to develop a positive learning relationship so that we can move beyond “the fundamentals” to new and greater levels of insight into literature, history, our civilization and culture. In education and life in general, I have always believed deeply in the power of positive expectations on human development. I therefore, try to always be positive with my students and to express my confidence in them both as learners and human beings.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
I graduated from Providence College, B.A. (magna cum laude) in 1968 and earned my M.A. in English Literature in 1969. I also have earned the following degrees: Boston University, Ed.M. (1973) Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge MA; M.Div.(with distinction) (1985) Weston Jesuit School of Theology, Cambridge MA; Th.M. (with distinction) (1987) University of the South, Sewanee TN, D.Min. 1995
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I am a sixty-six year old former educator at both the secondary and college levels. I have been tutoring for about three years. In addition to being an educator, I was also a business consultant for over thirty years and an ordained priest of the Episcopal Church for fifteen years. My wife and I live just east of Providence RI. We have three sons who are all grown and pursuing careers of their own.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
In addition to things like reading, cooking and the movies; I am also an avid sailor. I have a blue water ocean cruising sailboat (home ported in Newport, RI), and spend a good deal of the spring, summer, and fall aboard her. We have two calico cats who accompany us on board.
