Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Chillicothe District Curriculum

The Illinois Learning Standards is a competitive, rigorous program that ensures students receive a strong education that will prepare them for life after high school, whether they pursue post-secondary education, enter the military, or directly enter the workforce. In math classes, students study how and why the math works to ensure that they have a thorough understanding of mathematical principles. They learn how to reason quantitatively and to create models that allow them to make predictions about outcomes.

Science classes study the world around them and use scientific processes to experiment in real-world situations and learn to evaluate their observations. In humanities classes, students learn how to structure their opinions and thinking. They encounter a variety of types of reading and learn to be effective communicators. Community service is also stressed so that students can learn to consider the situations of others. Students who are involved in their community are more likely to become engaged, active citizens later in life.

Chalk Talk: Public vs. Private Colleges

The fundamental difference between public and private colleges is how they’re funded. Public schools are funded by the state, which means that they have certain mandates to follow, including being required to accept a certain percentage of in-state students and offering in-state tuition. Private colleges are funded by tuition, mostly, and tend to have significantly higher tuition costs. The two types of schools are organized differently, also. Public schools tend to be organized into universities, which means that similar departments are grouped together, usually sharing a building, whereas private schools might be universities or might be colleges, which are organized differently. This is mostly due to since, since public schools tend to be larger than private schools, though this isn’t always the case.
