Decatur District and Curriculum
Decatur City Schools follows a K-12 core curriculum which includes Reading, Writing, Technology, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, Music, Art, World Languages, and Physical Education. Decatur City Schools is aligned with a standards-based curriculum that details expected learning outcomes, are accountable through various assessments, and prepares students for career goals of their choosing.
In Mathematics, the standards of solving problems, demonstrating methods, showing proof and cognitive abilities, and communicating their findings are among the expected outcome. The learning strands of mathematical aptitude include being competent in a variety of strategies, comprehension of calculation methods and operations used for different types of problems, and being proficient in mathematical procedures.
The English/Language Arts curriculum requires a great amount of reading and comprehending non-fiction, informational text which will become more complex and introduce new concepts and language styles. Students participate in writing tasks, for purposes ranging from reflective to persuasive, and develop processes that include brainstorming, writing, revising, and editing. Students begin with basics and their skills grow so that they are equipped to perform any formal writing task by the time they are ready to pursue college or career goals.

The science program’s goal for all Alabama students is to become scientifically literate. Decatur City Schools’ K-12 science program has high achieving benchmarks, and follows the Alabama Course of Study in Science. This program encourages and requires scientific thinking with hands-on activities so that students develop both the processes and knowledge within the topics of science.
The schools offer a range of dynamic programs for students at all ages. These also have curriculum which guide the goals for the students. Some are aimed towards accelerating learning for students, there are curriculum guidelines for students acquiring a second language, and initiatives in the areas of Math, Science, and Technology which inform the teaching in those areas.

- Young Audience Series - The Young Audience Series is an initiative designed to expose students in grades K-5 to a broad range of theatrical and performance events. Students are able to see stories and texts interpreted and come to life, supporting their overall literacy skills.
- Dauphin Island Sea Lab - The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is a Discovery Hall Program that provides 3-day field trips to Dauphin Islands where students learn about marine enviornments and science. Students are able to participate in many activities and develop a strong understanding of eco-systems and environmental responsibility.
- Decatur City Schools Foundation - The Decatur City Schools Foundation is helping the school system by giving the funds essential to the educators to be effective, such as resources for the classroom and technology practices. Parents and community members are able to participate in a number of ways through this outreach group.
