Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Durant District Curriculum

In English Language Arts in the upper-elementary grades, children learn how to spell confusing words. Words with specific rules and complex patterns for spelling, such as those with ough, igh, ur, and eigh are taught. The students will also learn about the inflected endings of words and when to use s or es to create the plural forms as well as properly using and spelling homophones such as two, to, and too and there, their, and they’re. The teachers will teach these concepts in isolation as well as within their writing.

In Mathematics, the upper-elementary student will learn their multiplication facts and be able to master the memorization of the facts to the number 12. This will enable them to use multiplication in a variety of problem solving exercises. After becoming more confident with the concept of multiplication, the students will be able to use multiplication in story problems, in beginning division, and in using multiple digits.

Chalk Talk: The Benefits of Integrating Subject Areas

Teachers can save time, increase reading and math skills, and make lessons more unique when integrating subject areas together. When teachers focus on reading material while teaching history content, this helps the children learn skills in two subject areas at once. The same can be done for mathematics: this subject can be added into science lessons, like in the measurement concepts or higher sciences, as in chemistry with the equations. Many teachers do this naturally, as to keep the focus of their day on reading and mathematics.
