Guelph/Eramosa District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The local schools maintain a strong curriculum which is founded upon core academics and engaging, innovative programs. The traditional academic subjects provide the scaffolds by which students prepare for college and career readiness, and the curriculum expands to also offer programs rich in technology, media, environmental learning, and other opportunities. Each subject or program has a detailed curriculum that explains what students will know and learn to do within their courses. Math and English are heavily emphasized in the curriculum as they each help students develop critical literacy, communication, problem-solving and reasoning skills.

We currently cover the following Guelph/Eramosa-area school districts: Wellington Catholic District School Board and Upper Grand District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Guelph/Eramosa District Curriculum

Literacy in all curricular areas, and across all genres is supported through the English curriculum as well as the development of literary appreciation for craft and meaning. In Math, the fundamentals which are drawn upon in the Sciences and Technology courses offered are built upon each year. Students are required to take formal assessments in these areas in grades 3, 6, and 9 to demonstrate that they have mastered the skills of elementary, intermediate and secondary math and literacy.

Students can also participate in arts courses or more rigorous arts and music programs. Beginning musicians acquire the ability to sight-read music with a level of proficiency that enables them to perform various works of music. Students perform and exhibit as individuals, in small groups, and as part of large groups as well, such as artists, bands and orchestras. Learners also engage in a review of music and musical performance. Students track their individual improvement, while also offering critiques and feedback for their peers.

Chalk Talk: The Value of Second Language Learning

The opportunity to develop a strong base within a second language is offered to all students in the local districts, and when taken up provides students with an asset that will benefit them in college and career pursuits. It will broaden the opportunities for the places where life may take them, and expands their thinking in many ways. Learning a second language deepens cultural awareness and increases the ability to translate information. The cognitive and social benefits are not to be underestimated and students should be encouraged to take up this opportunity.
