Metropolis District and Curriculum

The schools attended by Metropolis students use the Illinois Learning Standards which provide detailed, grade-level objectives for all academic subjects. This means that students are held to high expectations for success, and faculty strive to make sure those expectations are met. In math classes, students study how and why the mathematical formulas work, so that students gain a stronger understanding of mathematics, rather than just memorizing formulas. Of course, they still have to memorize formulas, but now they also gain an understanding of how the formulas work in real world applications.

We currently cover the following Metropolis-area school district: Massac Unit #1.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Metropolis District Curriculum

In science classes, students study the natural world, how things are made, both organically and through engineering. They learn to evaluate things scientifically, to ask questions and do research to answer them in a controlled, scientific manner. They also learn how to communicate their scientific observations both verbally and through representations in graphs and charts. They eventually progress to more complex engineering questions and use the skills and knowledge they learned in real-world situations and applications.

In history and humanities classes, students study the decisions and actions of the past and how these have shaped the present, and in so doing, they become able to study the decisions and actions of the present in order to consider the future. Students read a variety of kinds of texts and learn to evaluate them in different ways. In conjunction with their reading assignments, they learn to write in a variety of formats. Overall, students graduate as competitive, capable individuals who are ready to face the challenges of the future.

Chalk Talk: Community College

Community colleges have gotten a bad rap in the past, but they are becoming more mainstream every day. One reason for the bad rap is that community colleges have an open enrollment policy, which means that anyone with a high school diploma, or equivalent, is eligible to attend. Part of the mystique of 4-year colleges and universities, in the past, has been their exclusivity, but with skyrocketing costs and less funding, the affordability of community colleges and public universities has changed many people’s minds. Also, community colleges are convenient. They offer flexible scheduling, with night and weekend classes, and even online classes, so not only can people actually afford to attend, they can find the time to attend while working.
