Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oakland District Curriculum

Regardless of which district students attend, they partake in a curriculum that is both research-based and standards-based. By designing learning experiences based on proven and standardized methods, all students are assured of receiving an education that will prepare them for their future lives and careers. Standards are established by the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core Standards, which provide rigorous learning objectives.

All Oakland students receive sound instruction on the use of technology. As part of the comprehensive technology curriculum, students begin by learning basic computer functionalities, such as how to use the keyboard, mouse and how to type. From there, students learn how to utilize computer software to complete assignments, be they text based or multimedia projects. Building upon this foundation, students learn to create professional-grade documents, from resumes to spreadsheets, and create a digital portfolio they can use to display exemplary work.

Chalk Talk: Brain Benefits from Art Education

Whether dance, painting, theater or band, students who participate in the arts have an outlet for expressing their creativity and exploring new ways to express themselves. But beyond that, students who participate in art education reap many valuable academic benefits. Art students tend to perform better on standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT. In particular, reading scores for students who participate in special art programs see a huge increase. In the classroom, students who engage in art education have improved attention, display more patience and persistence and have heightened focus as well.
