Chalk Talk: What Students Learn in Studio Art Courses

For young artists, a studio art class provides valuable learning experiences that can help them more fully appreciate the process and techniques used by artists. The primary goal of studio art classes is to give students experience with different medium, like photography or ceramics, but it also gives them the chance to see through a whole project from planning to exhibiting to reflecting on their work. Students engage in self-critiques of their work and may begin to build a portfolio. Students also reflect on the meaning and design of their work and have opportunities to discuss the social and cultural influences on their work. Learning how to speak about art and aesthetics also emerges within studio art classes, and prepares future artists for college art programs or working with other designers or gallery owners.
