Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Orono District Curriculum

The study of energy is an integral component of the elementary science curriculum in Orono. Learners explore different forms of energy, including sound and light. Students acquire an understanding of factors that impact how we interpret sounds. In particular, students explore pitch and how the rate of vibration determines pitch. Students also examine light, including how shadows form and the ways in which they can change. The manner in which light travels is a subject of study as well. Students describe the straight-line motion of light, and identify the processes that alter light, including absorption, reflection, and redirection.

In Orono’s middle school health sciences curriculum, students identify healthy choices they can make in various aspects of their lives, including proper foods to eat and physical activities they can engage in to maintain an adequate level of fitness. Family history of illnesses and disease are explored as well. Students learn about genetic factors that play into one’s health, such as a predisposition to develop physical or mental health issues. Learners explore the various messages they receive about health and decision-making from their friends and family.

Chalk Talk: Helping a Shy Child Find Success in School

If you have a child that’s shy, school can be a stressful proposition for them. Anxieties about making friends, having new teachers, or joining a new class are common, particularly at the start of a new school year. However, there are a number of steps you can take to help your child be successful in the social realms of school. A big part of helping a shy child is to have empathy for their situation. Shyness is a personality trait, and not something that can be turned on and off at a whim. The way you react to your child will have a significant impact on how they view themselves in the social world. Being patient, not forcing your child into social situations, and not making too much of being shy are all simple, yet critical aspects of developing a strong system of support. Ensuring that you collaborate with your child to work on improving behaviors and attitudes so that shyness doesn’t become a roadblock to success is another important step you can take.
