Parry Sound District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools in Parry Sound use the Ontario Curriculum as the broad guidelines for the instructional process. It is designed to build core competencies for students through a strong foundation in academics and opportunities to explore subjects of individual interest. The curriculum provides the year-by-year organization of the delivery of knowledge and clearly states what it is that students should know and be able to do. Within each academic subject, the curricular framework specifies skills, concepts and principles, and anticipated outcomes for learning. The core competencies which students gain in their elementary and middle school years, enables a range of opportunities at the high school level.

We currently cover the following Parry Sound-area school districts: Near North District School Board and Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Parry Sound District Curriculum

In Math, the skills that students develop include competencies in numerical operations, geometry and measurement, and quantitative data analysis. Mathematical literacy and the ability to communicate are among the broad competencies students are expected to gain. The principles of using mathematical information as a basis for reasoning and problem-solving are central goals and students will have developed this range of critical thinking skills at the completion of their math education.

In English, the curriculum is designed around the development of competencies in reading, writing and communicating. The language, grammar and conventions are fundamentals taught during elementary school and the years of reading, writing responses, and discussing ideas provides the base by which students are able to do more in-depth analysis of the concepts with which they are presented. The curriculum also encompasses Media Studies which provides another avenue by which students are able to evaluate information and point of view.

Chalk Talk: Transitioning from High School to College

Students will already have been used to taking courses in a variety of content areas, but of course, the college-level classes will be more challenging. Students need to make sure they carefully read their syllabi so that they understand the exact expectations for each assignment and exam. Students will have to study greater quantities of material, and the written exams will be worth a higher percentage of their grade, so they need to put all their study time in and realize they may not have a second chance to improve their grade. Also, professors will generally not be nearly as forgiving and accommodating as most high school teachers; everything is the responsibility of the student. Students also need to be prepared to write more and at a higher level.
