Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Picayune District Curriculum
Students begin their Social Studies education in kindergarten as they learn about themselves and their immediate world. Each year they expand their horizons a little farther into studying the school, neighborhood, the community, the state, and the world and its history. By the time they enter high school, these students are ready for the choices that they are given to expand upon their previous studies. In high school they are able to go more in-depth into government, state history, or world history.
The Science curriculum begins with teaching children how to look at item with a scientific outlook, and to not be afraid to ask questions about science. They then begin to learn a bit about the scientific process and see how things work together to create something else. As they build on this foundation the students begin to learn about the processes of the body and the world around them. This curriculum allows the students who graduate from Picayune High School to look at the world with the curiosity of a scientific mind.
