Trent Lakes District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Ontario Curriculum is used to guide student learning in all academic subjects from elementary to secondary school. The curriculum is also used as the basis for formal assessments and the standardized and end-of-year tests which students take are designed to measure that students achieved the objectives for learning. The core academic subjects of Math, Science, History, and English are taught by developing fundamentals and basic skills, applying them and creating new work or experiments or solutions, and also asking questions and making connections about knowledge.

We currently cover the following Trent Lakes-area school districts: Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Trent Lakes District Curriculum

One goal of the overall curriculum is for students to see how subjects connect and function in the real world. Students are also expected to acquire higher order, critical thinking skills which are essential in their future academic and professional pursuits. By the time students graduate, they will have the ability to mathematically and scientifically reason, analyze texts and information, communicate effectively, and develop and express their own ideas.

There are also business and career-related classes that help students understand what post-secondary life will be like. Students learn about the various elements of a business contract, including the offer, consideration, and acceptance stages. Different types of contracts are studied as well. Students learn about unilateral, bilateral, void, voidable, valid, and unenforceable contracts. Laws related to employment are also explored. Rights of employees, child labor laws, maternity leave, and a right to a non-hostile work environment are studied.

Chalk Talk: How Music Helps Learning

Music can aid learning in many ways, and there are even some school districts that will allow students to listen quietly to music on headphones during quiet work time. As many of us know, we learn lyrics to songs with ease and rapidity and it is totally natural, although even though they are similar acts, memorizing a long poem may seem like quiet a challenging task. The music creates a harmony and consonance which engages areas of the mind that may otherwise be distractable. If a student finds that music is effective when they are studying, the use of it should be encouraged. It may also generate a conversation about the ways the student learns best.
