EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
My personal goal as an educator has always been to challenge students to become the best they possibly can in all ways. Overall, my objective as a teacher is to challenge students to think critically. To openly share their opinions, questions and misunderstandings with one another in a respectful, open-minded way.I aim to have my students be reflective thinkers by conferencing with them about their learning as often as possible.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Biology, from Acadia University in 2005. Knowing that I wanted to become an elementary teacher I made sure to balance out my heavy math/science course load with as many English courses as was allowed. I have a strong background in biology, chemistry and mathematics. I then graduated with my elementary teaching degree in 2007 from Acadia University. I have always known that education was important and from an early age developed skills that helped me achieve my goals.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
After graduating I started teaching in a grade 3 classroom in High Prairie, AB. After this I moved to Gift Lake, AB where I would teach for the next six years in a grade 5 classroom for four of those years and grade 6 for two, teaching all subjects excluding physical education and Cree. Teaching on a Métis settlement has also transformed my teaching in a way that has made me more aware of individual student needs based on not only ability but also culture, interests, home life and previous experiences. Over these years I have become extremely focused on literacy and have utilized technology in many ways to develop students’ reading and writing abilities.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Currently, my extracurricular activities surround my two young children. I also enjoy reading, playing soccer, and keeping up to date on educational trends online.
