Teaching is not about imparting information. It is about opening doors, showing where we’ve been and allowing students to see their way forward. My job is not to turn on the light for students; it’s to point to where the light switch is. It is important to let students know that their greatest gift is their curiosity, and to help them develop that.

I have an Honours B.A. in English from Concordia University in Montreal, an M.A. from McMaster University in Hamilton. I taught English for 3 years at the University of British Columbia. I also have 15 years experience in human rights and employment law in Canada as an investigator. I have also worked extensively in curriculum and e-learning development. I am also a keen student of, and have read extensively in, history.

My name is Owen and I have been tutoring since the summer of 2010. Prior to tutoring, I worked for over 20 years in human rights investigation and policy development. I tutor in a number of subjects – math, English, Social Studies. When I am not tutoring, I spend my time playing music in and around the western corner of Lake Ontario.

My main hobby is music. I perform in several bands, playing the bass, everything from rock to jazz to Celtic to bluegrass.
